South Africa’s Madikwe and Sabi Sands private game reserves are home to a multiplicity of bird species, many localised and very unique in a southern-African and global context. For this reason Jaci’s Lodges in Madikwe and Cheetah Plains in Sabi Sands are offering specialist birding safaris in these pristine wilderness areas

If you are more interested in the iridescent Cape glossy starling foraging behind a pride of lions than the lions themselves, these safaris are for you.

They are from November 23 to 26, 2012 at Jaci’s Lodges in Madikwe, and from November 30 to December 3, 2012 at Cheetah Plains in Sabi Sands.

Birding specialist Martin Benadie will lead the safaris. Martin is an enthusiastic bird photographer so the outings are suited to those wanting to take time photographing these often frustrating subjects. By understanding bird behaviour and knowing where to search for certain species makes for better bird photographs.

Jaci’s Lodges in Madikwe are in the north-western region on the Botswana border, is in vast plains of arid acacia woodland and grassland. It’s very rich in wildlife and has about 350 bird species.

Cheetah Plains in Sabi Sands comprises 65 000 hectares, and adjoins the western boundary of the Kruger National Park. The north-eastern corner, offers exciting birding opportunities with summer tallies in excess of 100 species a day quite easily achievable. To date, some 400 species have been recorded in the reserve.

Added benefits of the safaris include:

·         Only the best months for birding will be offered

·         The reserves have good mammal viewing and photographic opportunities as an adjunct to the birding.

·         Participants will be given detailed bird and mammal species checklists which will be completed daily after dinner.

·         A warm welcome and personalised, yet discreet hospitality.

·         The opportunity to try out – and get advice on - Swarovski Optik binoculars and scopes in the field.
