A good night out

TripAdvisor recently conducted a survey, calculating the cost of a night out in a variety of cities around the world for its TripIndex Cities. It based the survey on the cost of a couple staying one night in a four-star hotel, including cocktails, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine, and a return taxi fare of 3.2 kilometres each way.

TripAdvisor's destination list of key cities from 49 countries is based on those that receive the largest number of international visitor arrivals, according to data compiled by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

While it may come as no shock that cities such as Oslo, Paris and New York were found to be among the most expensive, South Africans may be surprised to find that Cape Town was named the ninth cheapest city for travellers in the world. According to TripAdvisor's calculation, a night out with four-star accommodation will cost a couple $212.49, which works out to about R2 100 (at a R10/$ exchange rate). A similar night out in Oslo, the current most expensive city, will cost $561.26 (R5 604), while Sofia in Bulgaria is a budget traveller's dream, costing only $153.21 (R1 529) for a night of revelry.

The list shows that Asia is the most affordable continent, while Europe is the most expensive, but some European cities – such as Sofia, Warsaw and Budapest – are bucking this trend.

While the cost of a hotel stay was the most expensive of any items of the night, the biggest disparity between cities was the return taxi trip. Comparing items, for the price of three taxis in Zurich a traveller can stay one night in a four-star hotel in Hanoi.
