Developing tomorrow’s best

New hotel school campus opens in Rosebank, Johannesburg

A recent article carried in a leading business publication noted that there was still too much of a fixation on degree study as the only solid path towards a sustainable career, when the reality is quite the opposite. As one education expert put it, "businesses across many sectors are desperate for young people who are technically qualified and experienced to fill a host of positions that don’t require someone who studied towards a degree, but rather someone who studied towards a qualification that gave them the technical expertise and the workplace readiness to be an asset from day one."

One of those sectors identified as always in need of qualified young people to fulfil a myriad of positions is the hospitality industry and indeed almost all students from The Private Hotel School (TPHS) find employment immediately upon graduation.

What's even more attractive is that the institution offer placement opportunities overseas and their network of successful alumni is testament to that.

The Private Hotel School has, up until now, only had one campus in Stellenbosch that can accommodate around 50 full-time students. But that is about to change with a second school being launched in Rosebank, slap bang in the middle of the vibey Keyes Art Mile and with a capacity for 100 students.

Says The Private Hotel Schools Director, Susina Jooste: "With the opening of our Rosebank campus, even more of tomorrow's hospitality industry leaders will be able to gain the hands-on educational and cultural awareness skills necessary to succeed in a competitive economy.

"TPHS is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training and our qualifications are registered with South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) respectively. TPHS is the master licence holder of The American Hospitality Academy (AHA) in Africa and our Higher and Advanced Certificates are endorsed by them, i.e. students who completed these certificates are also eligible for the AHA Diploma in International Hospitality Management or Culinary arts. Our courses offered include:

  • Occupational Chef Certificate - a 3-year, full-time course for entry-level chef/cook positions in leading hotels and restaurants.
  • Higher Certificate in Hospitality Management - a one year, full-time course for entry-level positions in the dynamic hospitality industry – or start or your own business
  • Diploma in Event Management - a 3-year, full-time course for those wanting to become an event specialist who can design and stage dynamic events of any size across a range of disciplines such as sport, business, cultural, entertainment, culinary, and community.
