Durban will participate in the international Blue Flag beach excellence scheme programme by aiming to obtain blue flags at four local beaches: uShaka, eMdloti tidal area, eMdloti main, and Umgababa. At a later stage, it will apply for Blue Flag status at uMhlanga Rocks and Westbrooks.

Blue Flag status is awarded to beaches that meet international standards of excellence in water quality, environmental education, lifeguard training, safety and other issues.

The city would first have a Blue Flag pilot status for a year at four beaches. During this time, Durban would have to demonstrate that it has complied with all 33 quality criteria required by Blue Flag International.
