On Sunday, 2 December people came out in their numbers to witness the official festive season lights being switched on at Cape Town’s iconic Grand Parade.

The theme for this year’s lighting spectacular was ‘Our City, Our People’, and to kick off the celebrations there was a free concert that started at 3pm and featured a host of renowned and emerging local artists. The line-up for the event included Mozambican born guitarist, Jimmy Dludlu as well as Lira, Freshlyground and DJ Ready D, who all kept the crowds singing along.

The party did not end there, though. A street parade commenced after the switch-on, with performers taking to the streets in giant glittery costumes, dazzling floats, big brass bands, dancers and stilt walkers proceeding from City Hall, up Darling Street and into Adderley Street.

The highlight of the day was the special Table Mountain float, celebrating its crowning as one of the New7Wonders of Nature earlier this year. Executive Mayor Alderman Patricia de Lille was joined on stage by Bernard Weber, founder-president of the New7Wonders Foundation, to honour the accolade in front of thousands of proud Cape Town residents. De Lille didn’t fail to acknowledge that the mountain has had a record number of visitors this November, which is the highest number in the last 10 years.
