Margate, the South Coast’s oldest and most famous coastal resort town, is proud to be the KwaZulu-Natal finalist for the Kwêla Dorp van die Jaar 2017 award.

The annual competition for South Africa’s best towns started in February and in March, Margate was announced as one of the KwaZulu-Natal semi-finalists alongside Richards Bay and Vryheid. As part of the programme’s show on 10 May, it was announced that Margate is the provincial winner based on popular vote, making it one of 9 finalists for the coveted annual Kwêla Dorp van die Jaar.

It all started with one woman’s faith in and commitment to Margate, Corrie Wernick from the Margate Business Association. From asking schools, businesses and Ugu South Coast Tourism to lend a helping hand and get locals and tourism members to vote for Margate, she has managed to get the whole town and indeed, the greater South Coast, to get behind Margate and get it through the various voting stages all the way to the finals! She even went as far as getting non-English, non-Afrikaans speaking businesses to vote by helping them sms their votes on their mobiles, showing her sheer determination!

Other worthy and passionate locals who have helped the whole process along and deserve a mention are Vicky Wentzel from Wozani Africa, Justin Klusener and Gavin Forbes who have been generous with their stunning images of Margate for the initial TV insert on the town, the various businesses in Margate showing their hospitality during the shoot, such as Margate Sands Hotel, both the Margate Wimpy’s, Larry’s, Cock ‘n Tail, Margate Airport, Margate Art Museum, Senzi’s on Faya to name a few. Other individuals who represented Margate and who were at the ready to say a few good words about Margate to the crew, were Counsellors Dave Watson and Johnny de Wet, Paul Jefferys, Louis Boshoff, Martie Walker, Louis Hansmeyer, Ant Brodovicz, Val Korb and Ugu South Coast Tourism CEO, Justin Mackrory.

As Mackrory points out “This journey to the finals clearly demonstrates the passion felt by locals for the popular resort town of Margate, but even more so, the great power of a collaborative team effort!”

The Kwêla team was hosted by Margate Business Association in conjuction with Ugu South Coast Tourism in Margate on 18-20 April 2017 to film the insert, just before the South Coast Bike Fest.

Voting for the finals will continue to be through sms. Everybody passionate about Margate, the South Coast and KwaZulu-Natal, are encouraged to send in their votes by sms to 33157 as of 20h30 on 24 May until 12h00 on 30 May 2017 by which time all 9 towns in the running would have been announced. Sms’s cost R1.50 and cellphone networks need to be in South Africa and Namibia.

The Kwêla Dorp van die Jaar will be announced on Kwêla on 7 June 2017. The winning town will win R1 million worth of marketing exposure from KykNET, plus a 30-second advert that will encourage viewers to visit the town and in addition a big party will be held in the winning town with music, food and fun! Let’s hope it’s Margate, as this town knows how to have a good party! The party will be filmed by Homebrewfilms and broadcast on Kwêla later in the year.

The Kwêla programme can be watched each Wednesday at 20h30 on DSTV’s KykNET channel.
