Day 31

Start: Romansfontein (Molteno)
Finish: Hofmeyer
Distance: 65.5km
Climb: 502m

We’ve changed our riding plan a little based on the westerly wind, possible rain, having time to see the Owl House, Terrblanche hospitality, etc. Plan is to have a few shorter and hopefully easier days into Nieu-Bethesda and then to crank up the distance as we breeze across the Karoo to Prince Albert (wind permitting!).

It’s really difficult to leave Romansfontein, but eventually we said goodbye for the umpteenth time and set off into the westerly. Initially it wasn’t too strong, so we could appreciate riding in beautiful surroundings and savour the last of the sandstone mountains before dropping off into the Karoo. A quick, but exhilarating run down the picturesque Klein Driehoek’s Pass brought us onto classic karoo plains. Quite a stark contrast from the previous vegetation.

We also turned more south towards Hofmeyer so the westerly was somewhat a tail wind blowing us down the trail and we made the best time we have at any stage of the journey down SA.

So today has been a really short 65 km ride into Hofmeyer and we don’t know what to do with all this spare time! First thing we did was to stop at the Karoobos Kaffee for one of the pies for which they are famous. The rest of the time will be spent catching up on stuff, which is different for each of us.

Here’s to hoping the westerly dies, the skies are clear and we roll on towards the Cape at pace.
