There are many superlatives that come to mind when first seeing the Mercedes Benz-AMG GLE 63S Coupe.
“Amazing”, “huge”, “a machine”, and “stunning” to mention just a few. In my opinion one word captures the essence of the car-that is “superb”. The car features so many amazing characteristics – from its spectacular good looks to its state of the art internal workings, one wants to continuously slip in behind the wheel.
Its aggressive front end, distinctive grille with vertical louvers create a huge presence. Colour-coded side skirts, exterior mirror housings and wheel arches, blend in with the overall appearance making one realise that this is not your ordinary every day vehicle.
On entering the car with it keyless entry, one can immediately sense that this is going to be a drive experience like no other. The dashboard lights up with AMG specific appointments and controls with the benchmark sporty feel. The AMG performance steering wheel with aluminium paddles, is also fitted with all of the controls necessary to insure you are in control of the vehicle at all times. The AMG seats are covered in Nappa leather and the ambient lighting is fully adjustable, as are the seats, to ensure your total comfort. The widescreen cockpit shows all of the vehicle functions, whilst the centre control panel includes the 3-stage ESP, manual transmission mode, adaptive damping adjustment as well as the AMG performance exhaust system, and suspension level control.
An interesting feature is the voice activated control, activated with the words “Hey Mercedes” that allows the driver to control the infotainment system and vehicle controls.
When cruising along the freeway, the vehicle control system will automatically bring the car back to the correct direction if one accidentally drifts toward the edge of the road. It will also slow the car down if approaching to a slower moving vehicle. The Driver Assist package supports the driver with a whole host of safety features and controls. Included is Active Stop and Go Assist which provides support when driving in heavy traffic.
Fitted with a 4.0 litre V8 turbo with EQ Boost starter–alternator which combines the starter and alternator in a single electric motor, providing an additional 16kw of power and 250Nm of torque. This supplies the 48volt electrical system enabling it to be used as a power generator providing hybrid functions and helping restart the engine with the start /stop function. Power is then fed to the wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission. A cylinder cut off system reduces fuel consumption, at lower speeds.
On the open road is where the Mercedes Benz AMG GLE 63 S Coupe really shows its metal. Comfortable and sophisticated, there are not many products that can compete with it. Smooth easy power when you need it.
Quiet and assertive, the vehicle certainly shows the way forward in no uncertain terms. If need be, a little touch of the accelerator easily gets one out of a tight situation, supported with its sporty and precise handling.
AMG Ride Control + Air suspension, and the Adaptive Damping System, ensure comfort and excellent vehicle dynamics whatever the road conditions are. In Trail and Sand mode the suspension can be raised 55 mm to increase ground clearance. All-wheel-drive is controlled by the driver with the 3-stage ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) from sporty to highly dynamic. An electronically controlled locking differential is standard, which helps traction when accelerating from standstill.
This car is certainly the “go to” luxury coupe available here is South Africa. Whether travelling to work and back, as moms taxi, or as holiday transportation during the year or for longer trips over the holidays, this is the perfect vehicle. A pleasure to drive or to travel in.
Whilst at a retail price of R2 948 000, this vehicle is relatively expensive, in my opinion it is worth every cent.
